چکیده
We have calculated the qq̄ potential over a wide range of lattice separations on a 48 ·56 lattice at β = 2.85. We are able to investigate both long-range and (by correcting for the effects of lack of rotational invariance) shortrange potentials. From the former we estimate the string tension and from the latter we are able to investigate asymptotic scaling. Fitting to this enables us to give an estimate for the Λ-parameter of pure-gauge SU(2).

From an accurate determination of the inter-quark potential, one can study the running coupling constant for a range of R-values and hence estimate the scale Λ MS. Detailed results are presented for SU (3) pure gauge theory from a study of a 36 4 lattice at β = 6.5.

Using an under-relaxed cooling algorithm we investigated the vacuum in the 2d O(3) model and 4d pure gauge SU (2). We calibrated the amount of cooling performed to have similar physical effect at different lattice spacings.

We present results from magnetic monopoles in SU (2) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. The lattices are 16 3 × N t , for N t = 4, 6, 8, 12, at β = 2.5115. Quantities discussed are: the spacial string tension, Polyakov loops, and the screening of timelike and spacelike magnetic currents.

We explain why compact U (1) confines and how to fix it. We show that plaquettes of negative trace carry most of the confinement signal in compact SU (2). We show how to perform noncompact gauge-invariant simulations without auxiliary fields. We suggest a way to simulate fermions without doublers.

We present some new three-loop results in lattice gauge theories, for the Free Energy and for the Topological Susceptibility. These results are an outcome of a scheme which we are developing (using a symbolic manipulation language), for the analytic computation of renormalization functions on the lattice.
